Radon Mitigation Questions

Get answers to common questions about radon mitigation systems, costs, and installation.

What is radon? Why Is It Dangerous?

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that forms from the decay of uranium found in soil, rock, and groundwater beneath your home. It’s completely colorless, odorless, and tasteless – making it totally undetectable without proper testing equipment.

When inhaled over time, radon breaks down into radioactive particles that lodge in lung tissue and emit harmful radiation. This ongoing exposure can damage DNA and lead to the development of lung cancer over many years. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths annually according to the EPA.

Where does radon come from?

Radon originates in the soil and rock beneath and around your home as uranium naturally decays over time. As it forms, radon gas rises through the soil and can seep into your home through foundation cracks, gaps around pipes, sump pits, construction joints, and other openings. The pressure difference between the inside of your home and the soil underneath it actually pulls radon inward, similar to how a chimney draws air. Once inside, radon can accumulate to dangerous levels – especially in lower levels with limited ventilation.

Can radon affect any type of home?

Yes. Radon can be a problem in any home – old or new, well-sealed or drafty, with or without a basement. In fact, tightly sealed, energy-efficient homes can sometimes trap radon more effectively than older, draftier ones. No type of construction material or building method makes a home immune to radon intrusion. The only way to truly know your home’s radon status is through proper testing.

Is radon only found in basements?

No. While radon concentrations are typically highest in basements and lower levels – because they are closest to the soil source – it can travel throughout an entire home. Radon moves through air currents, HVAC systems, and gaps in flooring, potentially reaching upper floors as well. If your family spends significant time on the first or second floor, those levels should also be considered when evaluating your risk. Any frequently occupied space in your home deserves attention when it comes to radon safety.

What is the EPA’s recommended action level for radon?

The EPA recommends taking immediate action if your home’s radon level is 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) or higher. They also suggest seriously considering mitigation at levels between 2–4 pCi/L, as no level of radon is truly without risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) actually recommends a lower action level of 2.7 pCi/L, reflecting a more cautious international standard. At Certified Radon Systems, our goal is to bring your levels as low as possible – ideally below 2 pCi/L.

We recently had Certified Radon Systems install a radon mitigation system in a house we were selling, and the entire experience was excellent from start to finish. The team was very knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and efficient throughout the whole process. Everything went smoothly, and every person I interacted with was professional and personable. It’s rare to find a company that combines great service with genuine care for their customers.

Scott was by far the most responsive person we contacted about our radon fan install. He called back on a Saturday and had us scheduled for install within 2 weeks. His team was prompt and answered all our questions during install ( also worked very politely around our 2 small rambunctious kids) Would recommend Scott and his team every time. Awesome job, thank you!
